The Patient\u2019s Surgical Experience"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2>The Patient\u2019s Surgical Experience<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The multidisciplinary team are with the patient through their \u201csurgical experience\u201d in what we describe as three phases:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Preoperative<\/li><li>Intraoperative<\/li><li>Postoperative<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The ORNAC Standards define each of these phases as they apply to perioperative nursing practice and are known as the \u201cPerioperative Phases of Patient Care\u201d (ORNAC, 2021).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-container-3 wp-block-columns\">\n<div class=\"wp-container-1 wp-block-column\">\n<h5>Preoperative Phase<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>The Preoperative phase encompasses the care of the patient prior to surgery. The patient should be prepared physically, mentally, and psychologically for the procedure they are about to undergo. The safety of the patient is critical in this phase and requires perioperative nurses to be vigilant in all aspects of care such as transference, positioning, induction (if a general anesthetic), maintenance of the aseptic environment, instrument\/sponge counts, and extubation. The Surgical Safety Checklist also begins in this phase, and you will learn about that in other modules. Perioperative nursing practices demonstrate ongoing advocacy on the patient\u2019s behalf, especially when the patient is no longer able to speak for themselves.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-container-9 wp-block-columns\">\n<div class=\"wp-container-7 wp-block-column\">\n<h5>Postoperative Phase<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the surgical intervention is complete the postoperative phase begins. The patient is prepared to be transferred back to their stretcher\/bed and taken to the post anesthetic \/recovery area.
