Workplace Violence
Perioperative workplace culture is evolving. Operating rooms are working toward achieving a culture of safety which does not include disrespectful behaviour, verbal abuse, bullying or physical abuse. Unfortunately, in healthcare organizations, disruptive behaviours such as incivility, bullying and lateral or horizontal violence are common.
These actions not only influence perioperative personnel, but they can also impact patient care.

Combatting Workplace Violence
If a perioperative nurse experiences workplace violence or witnesses it, it is vital to act.
All hospital organizations have a workplace code of conduct. All perioperative personnel must be trained in the actions to take when workplace violence is encountered. Acts of incivility, bullying and lateral or horizontal violence should be reported. Reports must be investigated, and depending on findings, may result in education, remediation/conflict resolution, or termination of employees.
If you are the target of workplace violence, it is important to report this and get the support you need. Most hospital organizations have Employee Assistance Programs where staff can receive counselling and support in determining the next steps.
