Module 6: Asepsis and Infection Prevention

🎯 Module Objectives
  1.  Explain aseptic principles and techniques required in the perioperative environment.
  2.  Describe the theoretical basis for surgical hand scrub using either water or waterless techniques.
  3.  Describe the theoretical basis for best practices of gowning and gloving oneself and others.
  4.  Explain the importance of establishing and maintaining the sterile field.
  5. Describe methods to confirm the sterility of surgical supplies, both disposable and reprocessed.
  6.  Recognize when the surgical setup is contaminated and follow appropriate steps to isolate contamination and maintain the sterile field.
  7.  Follow the ORNAC (Operating Room Nurses Association of Canada) standards for introducing items to the sterile field.

Introduction

This module provides students with a foundational understanding of infection prevention and aseptic techniques in the operating room environment. It covers methods for setting up and maintaining the sterile field to prevent SSIs (Surgical Site Infections). It is vital for all perioperative team members to have knowledge of aseptic techniques and infection prevention. Surgical site infections (SSIs) can increase patient mortality, lengthen hospital stays, and consume additional resources. They are preventable through careful adherence to aseptic techniques and standard precautions. Team members must follow stringent guidelines in the operating room including wearing proper surgical attire, traffic control, and routine cleaning.
