Module 5: Inside the Operating Room: Cleaning and Infection Control 

🎯 Module Objectives 
  1. Apply health care infection control practices in the operating room. 
  2. Describe the different environmental cleaning requirements in the operating room between patients. 
  3. Explain the differences between turnover and terminal cleaning practices. 
  4.  Explain the link between surgical site infections and environmental cleaning practices. 
  5. Describe the perioperative practices for ensuring standard and transmission-based precautions. 
  6. Recognize the impact of perioperative waste and identify opportunities to reduce waste and cost. 
  7. Identify ways that the circulating nurse can plan, organize, and prioritize to reduce waste while meeting the needs of the patient.

Introduction 

This module includes a brief overview of common microorganisms that must be accounted for in the Operating Room environment. Standard transmission-based precautions and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required in the operating room are also covered. Specific standards are highlighted to reduce the opportunities for transmission in the OR.
